Mechanical Interoperability Protocol

Purpose

This protocol defines how Orbita's modular joint system works so that anyone can design compatible structural components. By following these specifications, third-party parts can interlock with Orbita modules without custom fabrication.

Joint System Overview

Orbita uses digital joints — CNC-fabricable connections that enable tool-free or minimal-tool assembly of structural panels and frames. The joints are designed to be cut on CNC routers, laser cutters, or desktop mills (e.g., Othermill, Shaper Origin).

The joint geometry is parametric: dimensions scale with material thickness while maintaining interoperability.

Reference Files

The current joint designs are available in the repository:

Compatibility Verification

A component is considered compatible with this protocol if:

  1. Its joint geometry matches the reference DXF profiles within stated tolerances
  2. It uses an approved material type and thickness
  3. It assembles without forced fitting or modification

Detailed tolerance values and a formal verification checklist will be added in future versions.
